What I Wish Someone Had Told Me – UW Writers’ Institute Keynote

I just finished listening to another great keynote speech at the UW-Madison Writers’ Institute. Dan Blank delivered an insightful and actionable speech via Skype yesterday on how to find an audience; and today, Hank Phillippi Ryan spoke on what she wished people would’ve told her about writing.

Here are my seven takeaways from her engaging and encouraging speech:

  1. You can learn from experience, but it doesn’t have to be your experience.
  2. There is no secret magic way to write a book. (Sorry.)
  3. Learn to love being alone, but also be sure to get out. You write alone, but you are not alone. Watch people, even at the grocery store, and use what you see for good characterization. Go out and meet other writers.
  4. Good editors are trying to make you a better you. (As an editor, I resonated with that one.)
  5. Your subconscious will lead you. Listen to your inner voice. If something feels wrong in your story, change it.
  6. There’s plenty of room for everyone to succeed. Be happy for your fellow writers.
  7. No matter what happens after typing The End, I followed my dream. (I teared up at that one. So, so true.)

And a bonus:

“You will if you want to.”

Stay tuned tomorrow when I’ll share what my favorite part of the conference was!

To read about my experience at the conference and more, you can sign up for my newsletter! I’ll share six things I learned during the panels and give you a free copy of my first book, Front Row!

3d-lyfers-263x300 February 9: New Book Release

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting the first four chapters of the book to introduce you to each of the main characters.

If you haven’t read Front Row yet, I will also be running a free book promotion in the days leading up to the release! So you will be able to pick up Front Row for free Saturday, February 6 through Wednesday, February 10.

Description: A model, a recent college grad, and a stay-at-home-mom embark on the trip of a lifetime. Former model Jade is not as young as she used to be, and she struggles to keep up with the younger, newer fans. Cody, who is a dead ringer for one of the boy band members, wants one last hurrah with his best friend before he has to join the real world. Frankie left her husband and children at home to cut loose with her friends and her five favorite guys.

But the super fans, who have dubbed themselves Lyfe Support, keep getting in their way. When these three groups of cruisers put their heads together, tricking security guards and masquerading as band members, they can outsmart even the savviest of fans. And maybe then, the band they love will finally notice them.

All the while, Luc, the supposed least popular member of the band, needs to resist the myriad of temptations on the cruise ship to determine what really matters to him in life.

Now with a new e-book cover! I’m still trying to find that sweet spot of what fits the genre and my story best. Ah the beauty of self-publishing.

Also, this might change, but I noticed that Amazon has the paperback on sale for $4.99 right now. That’s the lowest I’m seen it yet!

Hope you have a happy and safe holiday weekend with much turkey and shopping for all.

Best-Selling Author

AKA, that one time a hashtag turned me into a best-selling author for a few days.

Thanks to a Twitter hashtag, some supportive online friends, and the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Select free book promotion, Front Row appeared on multiple best seller lists on Amazon! And it was awesome. Even though I didn’t make a cent.

Here’s how it all came to be:

On Tuesday, I noticed a couple people I follow on Twitter were using the hashtag #bandbooksweek. I was like, band books? I wrote a book about a band! It turns out the hashtag was a play on #bannedbooksweek except you combine a band name with the name of the book. My two submissions were Hanson and Gretel and Emma-nem. I know. So clever…

Anyway, I figured obviously the people using the hashtag were music fans, so I jumped on KDP Select and created a 4-day free book offer for anyone who saw my tweet to take advantage of. I didn’t want to spam anyone, so I sent out four tweets about it in a 24-hour period, and then I promoted it on my other social networks as well.

For the duration of the promotion, I checked my stats a bit obsessively and was absolutely giddy as I saw my units sold numbers go up and my rank numbers go down. I topped out in the Women’s New Adult & College Fiction category at #21! I also made the Top 100 Kindle Free books in the Women’s Romance Fiction and Contemporary Women’s Fiction categories and stayed there the last three days my book was free.

If my husband wasn’t so proud of me, I would’ve been insufferable that first night, referring to myself as a “best-selling author.” Such as, “How does it feel to be married to a best-selling author?” Or, “Get off my pillow, pooch, don’t you know I’m a best-selling author?” Thankfully, I got much more humble after some sleep.

When the promotion ended, I went back to the obscurity of the paid list with my rank numbers back in the thousands. But it was so fun while it lasted, and I can’t wait until it happens again (fingers and toes crossed!). Next time, hopefully I’ll have more books to offer, too. That’s the goal!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to every one of my readers, new and old! You make my day.
